BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) Sept 10, 2016-- A report released Friday by the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem revealed that 19-year-old Muhammad Yudef Sebar Abu Hashhash, who was killed by an Israeli sniper on Aug. 16 during a military raid in Hebron’s al-Fawwar refugee camp, was not taken part in clashes at the time he was killed as was initially reported by media.

According to field research conducted by B’Tselem, Abu Hashhash, who was initially reported as 17-years-old, and other youths in the camp had climbed to the roof of a building and threw stones at soldiers who had also taken position on rooftops in the camp, something commonly seen during raids on Palestinian communities. B’Tselem reported that the youths continued periodically to climb to the roof and throw stones throughout the day.

Some ten Israeli soldiers entered the home of Bajes al-Hamuz nearby Abu Hashhash’s home at around noon, and proceeded to close the family in the bedroom as they ransacked their home. According to al-Hamuz, when the soldiers left their home some eight hours later, the family found a hole carved into the wall of their guestroom.

During the raid on the home of al-Hamuz, witnesses told B’Tselem that a sniper was positioned at the hole in the family’s guestroom located some 30 to 40 meters away from Abu Hashhash’s family home.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) August 16, 2016-- A Palestinian teenager died on Tuesday afternoon after being shot by Israeli forces with live ammunition earlier in the day during clashes in the al-Fawwar refugee camp in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

The ministry identified the slain youth as 17-year-old Muhammad Abu Hashhash.

Palestinian Red Crescent spokeswoman Errab Foqoha told Ma'an that Abu Hashhash succumbed to wounds sustained when he was "shot with live ammunition in the heart" by Israeli forces during clashes in al-Fawwar in which at least 32 other Palestinians were injured.

Israeli forces stormed al-Fawwar at dawn on Tuesday, ransacking homes and interrogating residents. Clashes then broke out between local youth and Israeli soldiers who fired live gunshots, tear gas, and rubber-coated steel bullets at the youth, injuring at least 33, including Abu Hashhash.

Earlier in the day, witnesses said Israeli soldiers stopped an ambulance belonging to the Palestinian Red Crescent which was trying to evacuate a young man who was seriously injured with live fire, and prevented the ambulance from leaving the camp for an hour.

Foqoha said she could not confirm whether the ambulance which was held up was carrying Abu Hashhash.

The teenager is one of 218 Palestinians to have been killed by Israelis since the beginning of a wave of unrest across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel in October. According to Ma'an documentation, at least 54 Palestinians were killed in clashes during this time period. While the majority of deadly clashes have occurred in refugee camps in the occupied Palestinian territory, this is the first reported death of an al-Fawwar resident since October.

The Hebron area in particular grew as the epicenter of upheaval, with Israeli authorities severely restricting the movement of Palestinians by sealing off towns and revoking work permits. At least 64 Palestinians from the Hebron district have been killed since October.

Some 32 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians during the same time period.

Due to the typically aggressive nature of the raids, clashes often erupt between local Palestinian youth who throw stones and are met in response with live fire and tear gas, often resulting in serious, sometimes fatal injuries.

Israeli police and soldiers have come under heavy criticism over the past year for what rights groups have referred to as “extrajudicial executions” of Palestinians who did not pose an immediate threat or who could have been detained through non-lethal means.

Israeli rights group Adalah revealed in July that Israeli police had unveiled new regulations which permit Israeli officers to open fire with live ammunition on Palestinian demonstrators before a non-lethal option is used.
An Israeli army spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the military's protocol on the use of live fire during clashes and demonstrations in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian Teen Said Killed, Over 40 Wounded in Israeli Army Raid Near Hebron

Three battalions of Israeli troops entered al Fawwar refugee camp in early morning hours and were confronted by Palestinians. IDF confirms only 11 wounded.

A Palestinian teen was killed and dozens were wounded during an Israeli army operation in the West Bank refugee camp of al Fawwar near Hebron on Tuesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, 17-year-old Mohammed Abu Hashash was hit by live fire to the chest. 

The Israeli military confirmed that 23 have been wounded, and said that they had been struck in their lower extremities by rounds from the "Ruger" rifle, considered to have less force than live fire. The IDF said that had detained three Palestinians wanted for interrogation. In contrast, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported that 25 had been wounded, and Palestinian sources said 40 were wounded. 

Eye witnesses said that Israeli forces had surrounded the refugee camp and that medical teams were struggling to reach and evacuate the wounded for care. Sources in al Fawwar claimed that some of those wounded were in serious condition and that both rubber and regular bullets had been fired.

"There's an unprecedented attack on the refugee camp," a Palestinian activist in the camp told Haaretz. "It's been going on for hours and hours, and everyone's silent, both the (Palestinian) Authority and international organizations."

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said that the large number of troops had entered al Fawwar in order to arrest suspects, to search for illegal weapons and to summon individuals for questioning. Violent clashes erupted when the soldiers were met by a hail of stones, Molotov Cocktails and improvised explosives, said the IDF. Israeli troops then responded with crowd control measures, including the use of the "Ruger" rifle. At least four were shot after throwing concrete blocks at the soldiers.

Meanwhile, Palestinian eye witnesses reported that the Civil Administration had demolished 10 buildings overnight including apartments and others that were constructed without permits in the town of Si'ir, near Hebron and in Bayt Jala near Bethlehem.

The mayor of Si'ir, Kaid Jaradat, said that in a north-eastern neighborhood located in Area C, eight buildings were demolished.

"These are homes where entire families live who were evicted from their homes and are left without a roof over their heads," said Jaradat.

An owner of one of the destroyed homes said that the family had been trying for two years to get a permit, but had failed. He said that 55 people had been left homeless as a result of the demolitions.
